A cold wind blows through the streets of Asheville. My colleague and I hurry down College Street, and duck into the doorway of Table, Jacob Sessoms’ imaginative New American restaurant in the heart of downtown. We head up a beautiful old staircase to The Imperial Life, the cocktail and charcuterie lounge that occupies the upper floor of this unique dining destination.
Concierge professionals from the Asheville area are tucked into comfortable seating nooks in this intimate lounge, & we take our seats at the bar. We receive a warm welcome from Teddy, Table‘s bar manager, who tells us a little about their seasonal menu which includes acclaimed craft cocktails, an extensive selection of fine spirits, local beer, and a wine list which showcases lesser-known varieties predominantly from the Old World. To compliment the excellent drink selection, The Imperial Life also offers innovative small plates, including house-made charcuterie, which celebrate all things raw, cured, pickled, or aged.
After enjoying some lovely before-dinner drinks, we head downstairs to Table for the main event. The warm, intimate dining space puts the focus where it should be: on the food. Jacob Sessoms and his team have prepared an amazing four-course menu for us. Dining at Table is a different experience each time you visit, as the menu changes daily based on local ingredients and inspiration that comes from a wide variety of both American and French culinary traditions. Jacob tells us, “I try to source everything from people I know.” His passion is clearly evident from his dedication to building relationships with local farmers to source his quality ingredients, to the carefully crafted meals that he makes with them.

Every member of the Table team is attentive, welcoming, and informative. The service is incredibly personal, and our January night passes from one culinary delight to the next. Our meal has a wine pairing for each course, and each selection is as unique as it is delicious. We end with a warm dessert, and a strong desire to return again and again to this wonderful restaurant nestled in the heart of downtown Asheville.
